The proposed gateway sculpture An Chluain for Monastery Road, Clondalkin draws from the historic, cultural and natural environment of the area: the 8th C. monastic settlement on the Camac River together with subtle references to Viking seafaring. The sculpture is composed of three elements and set on a raised mound that suggests a lucht in an early monastery:
1. Two upright 3.2m high bronze elements, forming a distinctive, gateway over a path on the public green space. The design is informed by the monastic architecture of Irish early medieval oratories.
2. A ‘door’ element in Cor-Ten weathering steel, also suggesting a medieval manuscript, is laser-cut and back-lit with the text of a page fragment of the ‘Karlsruhe Calendar’ (Cod. Aug. CLXVII, Augiensis 167). Crónán of Clondalkin is mentioned in the cover page of this 9th C. manuscript.
